Portrait
was launched in 1976 U.S.A. as an Epic subsidiary with an artist roster
that initially included Joan Baez, Burton Cummings and (after a legnthy
contract dispute with Mushroom records), Heart. Ringo Starr signed up in
1978. The following year the floundering label was ended with it's only
moneymaker Heart moving over to the parent label Epic.
Portrait
was re-launched again in 1982, this time by CBS/Columbia (Epic in the UK),
with a more current artist roster consisting of Cyndi Lauper, Altered Images
and Sade. The label was stopped again in 1986 with some artists moving
over to CBS.
CBS
re-re launched Portrait again in 1988 as a Jazz label (ending by 1990).
Epic
took another stab at it in 1992 - gone by 1994
AGAIN with CBS in 1998. This time as a Heavy Metal label and mercifully
put to rest by 2002. |
